Helpful Home Improvement Tips

The Lawhead Team would like to share some helpful home improvement tips for 2012.

There are simple home improvement steps you can take around your house to save a little money here and there.  Read up on just a few home improvement tips we have come up with:

Energy Assessment – You can hire a professional auditor to assess your home’s energy consumption.  This may seem like a pricy and unnecessary expenditure however making your home energy efficient will end up saving you more money over time.

Insulation – Having poor insulation can affect utility bills in both the summer and winter.  If your home is not properly insulated you will end up spending more money on gas and electricity during the harsh weather months.  If you notice your electric and gas bills are higher than they should be, it’s a good idea to have your insulation checked and properly repaired.

Look for Air Leaks – If you can feel any kind of draft around walls, ceilings, doors and windows, plug them up with any type of weather-stripping material such as caulk, foam or tape.

Home Appliances and Electronics – These make up 20% of your home’s energy bill.  From the refrigerator to the television, if you replace these appliances with Energy Star rated appliances will help save you money in the long run.

Recycle – Separate glass, aluminum and plastic into separate containers.  You can go to your local recycling center and get a few dollars back for your recycling efforts.  Also going paperless for your bills is helpful in minimizing waste.

Water Filter – Instead of repeatedly buying water bottles, get a water filter.  This will definitely save you money in the long run and greatly helps reduce waste.
